The Philippine Life Insurance Association, Inc. (PLIA) is the umbrella organization of the 31 life insurance companies currently operating in the country.

Through Presidential Proclamation No. 1059, issued on August 20, 1997 by then President Fidel V. Ramos, the first week of October of every year has been declared as Life Insurance Consciousness Week (LICW).  It is during this month when industry activities related to promoting the value of life insurance in financial planning and risk management get into high gear.

The 2014 LICW commemorative activities will focus on the theme of disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).  As one engaged in managing risks, the life insurance industry needs to be in the forefront of promoting DRRM given the growing environmental threats and occurrence of natural disasters in the country.

In this regard, our traditional LICW activities have been supplemented by new ones in support of the DRRM focus, as shown below:

“LIFE ROCKS”  Benefit Concert

This is a concert of mixed music of classics by the Manila Symphony Orchestra and rock by a blend of old and new artists.

PLIA is a co-producer with AVA Prime for this concert whose beneficiary will be orphaned children of Typhoon Yolanda and other calamities.  This concert aims to promote the value of life insurance in preparing for life’s uncertainties.

In line with the theme of disaster preparedness and response, PLIA  entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Couples for Christ BCOP-ANCOP (Building the Church of the Poor-Answering the Cry of the Poor) for the donation of a scholarship fund to finance ten High School students from the Typhoon Yolanda affected communities in Leyte for the school year 2015-2016.

Shown in photo during the MOA signing and turnover of check donation are, from left: George Mina, PLIA general manager; Atty. Alfredo Tumacder, Jr., PLIA director; Evelyn Carada, PLIA president; Mimi Bello and Atty. Rene Bello, head BCOP-ANCOP South B; Amb. Sulpicio Confiado, head ANCOP Education South B and Precie Confiado; Levi Abo, ANCOP South B build coordinator and Cyra Abo.

As PLIA develops its knowledge base and progressively pursues initiatives on DRRM, we will endeavor to eventually share relevant information not only to our policyholders, but to the general public as well.  We will do this through community-based awareness activities that we will have as integral part of our Corporate Social Responsibility programs.

PLIA trusts that the increased awareness by the public on the growing risks to life and limb from adverse environmental forces would create better appreciation of the value that life insurance provides.

The life insurance industry prays for the success of the “LIFE ROCKS” concert as it endeavors to provide continuing support to recovery efforts for calamity victims.
